Tourist Attractions

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh is situated at a height of 2200 m above the sea level. The present capital of Himachal Pradesh and the former summer capital of the Colonial India, Shimla has been gifted with all the bounties of nature which one can think of. Surrounded by lush-green hills with snow-capped peaks and scenic locations, Shimla magnetically attracts the people from all across the globe. There are various tourist attractions near Shimla some of them are enlisted below:

The Ridge and Mall Road

The Ridge of Shimla is known for organizing several government functions and fairs. It is the key venue for all the major events as well as celebrations that take place here in Shimla. Summer Festival that is the most famous festival is held here at the Ridge.

LOCATION

The Ridge of Shimla is an extremely famous tourist attraction that is set in the heart of Shimla. It is situated along the Mall Road that is the famous shopping centre of Shimla.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Ridge of Shimla is the hub of all the cultural activities of Shimla. Some of the prominent places of Shimla such as the Lakkar Bazaar, Mall, Scandal Point, Jakhoo hill, etc are in close proximity to the Ridge.

BEST TIME

Open all around the year but since the Summer Festival is held during the months of April or May, one can plan a visit during these months.

Kali Bari Temple

Kali Bari Temple is a very popular tourist attraction that is situated at a strategically planned location. Built in the year 1845, the temple is dedicated to Goddess Kali who is also known as Shyamala. From the Goddess Shyamala, the capital of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla gets its name.

LOCATION

The Temple is located at the Kali Bari Road, Shimla. The British brought it to its new site.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Kali Bari temple of Shimla is said to be an exceptionally religious place of India. The temples houses a shrine of the Hindu Goddess Shyamala. Shyamala is believed to have multiple aliases like Durga and Kali.

BEST TIME

The temple is open all round the year.


Kufri

Kufri is known for its tranquil surroundings, breathtaking views as well as distinct stunning locales Kufri is known as one of the best places to visit in Shimla. Kufri is popular as the Switzerland of the East. The beauty of the Kufri hill will definitely entice all. It is ideal for adventure activities in Shimla which includes skiing and hiking that definitely must be tried at least once when you visit Kufri. Snow-clad hills of Kufri make it the hotspot for trying your hand at skiing.

LOCATION

Kufri is located about 19 kilometres from Shimla and can be reached easily from Shimla. One can reach Kufri by road since the hill station is located very near to the National Highway - 22.

BEST TIME

The ideal time to visit Kufri is during winters. Months between November to February seem ideal. For those who are not into adventure sports or skiing can visit the hill station during the months of April to June. Weather is pleasant all year round.




Jakhoo Temple

Jakhoo Hill is the highest point of the city. It is covered with the Alpine trees. On the top of the flat hill is the colourful Jakhoo Temple as well as the newly built Hanuman statue.Said to be the favourite escape for the visitors who enjoy calm and peace, you just need to be beware of the criminally minded monkeys who are ready to rob food from the visitors.

LOCATION

In order to reach the hilltop, you'll have to walk for approximately 30 minutes. Thereafter, there is a pleasant route that will direct you to the Jakhoo Hill.

HIGHLIGHTS

The summit of Jakhoo Hill Shimla is some 2,455m and about 200m higher than the central ridge of Shimla. Temple at the Jakhoo Hill is dedicated to the Lord Hanuman who is believed to be the Hindu monkey god. Monkeys clearly rule the Jakhoo hill.

BEST TIME

Ideal to visit during winter months of November to March. Open Daily.

Indian Institute for Advanced Studies

Indian Institute of Advanced Study is a well-known Indian research center and is a marvelous work of Scottish Architecture. The Inside of this monument is teak-paneled and there is an entrance doorway, a huge staircase and fireplace which best parts to sightsee here.

LOCATION

You can take any bus or rickshaw in Shimla and it will take you to this research Centre.

HIGHLIGHTS

It was constructed in 1884-1888 and initially was the residence of Lord Dufferin. The architecture was the main vision of Henry Irwin who was hired to manage the construction of this grand structure. Post-Independence, it became a residence to India's President and apparently works as a research Centre and an Institute.

Chail

Chail is the ultimate place for setting up summer camps in a snow-clad town. It is a small hill slope in Shimla that was built solely for the purpose of helping people escape from summer heats. And eventually, the place turned out to be one of the best places to visit in Shimla.

In fact, it's a resort that offers people exposure to the spectacular deodar forests scattered all around the hilly slope. While deodar is the common tree found in this region, you can also find pine and fir forests complementing the majestic beauty of forests in the hilly region.

LOCATION

Chail has located 45 KM away from Shimla, at the foothills of Himalayan ranges.

HIGHLIGHTS

Nature lovers and peace seekers can find this place ideal for escaping from the hustle and bustle of city life. Besides enjoying the nature closely, you can also walk on the highest cricket ground in the world or dine at Lake Restaurant.

BEST TIME

The best time to visit Chail is in between March to June. And if you love to witness snowfall, December to March would be the ideal time.

Hotsprings

In local language, 'Tattapani' means �hot water'. The place is famous for its hot water springs that is spread over an area of one square kilometre. It's pure water is rich in sulphur content and is believed to have curative power for various kinds of bodily and skin diseases.

LOCATION

Tattapani village is located in Mandi district at a distance of 51 km from Shimla and 29 km from Naldehra. It is situated on the right bank of river Sutlej at an altitude of 2,230 ft. above the sea level.

HIGHLIGHTS

Tourists can visit a popular Hindu religious place called Shivji Ka Gufa (Shiva's cave) which is just 4 km away from Tattapani. Adventure lovers can go for white water rafting on Sutlej river. One can also enjoy a bonfire with family or friends at night along the river side.

BEST TIME

Winters are considered the best time to visit Tattapani since one gets to enjoy the Hot water sulphur springs near the banks of River Sutlej. The summers in Tattapani are from April to June and are pleasant with the temperatures ranging from 12 to 20 degrees with clear skies.

Naldehra

Crowned with a springing turf the Golf Course in Naldehra was suggested by Lord Curzon. He was so enchanted by the place that he gave his daughter Alexendra, "Naldehra" as her second name. Naldehra is famous for world famous Golf Course. Perched on the edge of the Golf Course at Naldehra, Hotel Golf Glade is an ideal retreat from Shimla. There are interesting picnic spots nearby.

LOCATION

You can hire a car from Shimla to Naldehra which is at a distance of 22 kms and reach the valley.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Naldehra Golf Club, Shimla, constitutes a course perched at an altitude of 2,200 meters.

BEST TIME

Best time to visit is during summers.
